The ribbed domes used in the area in front of the mihrab built in the tenth century were an innovation of the Cordoba Mosque. As in a gothic arch (of later construction) the ribs give support to the structure . The inner surfaces of the vault and the structure become more complex than in the original phases and are decorated and exposed.
