Madinat al-Zahra was a city founded by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III in the tenth century a few miles outside Cordoba. The city was destroyed by Berber armies in the early eleventh century.  Because of its abandonment and lack of construction disturbance it offers a unique example of Islamic town planning during the same period as the Cordoba mosque as well as exhibiting architectural detailing of the same period.
