Also known as the Grand Mosque of Cordoba or just La Mezquita,  this is the most remarkable extant building of al-Andalus. Built in the eighth century as a mosque and renovated as a cathedral after the Reconquista, this majestic building stands as a witness of the dual character of the Iberian society of the Middle Ages. With its horseshoe arches, calligraphy mosaics and gothic vaults, the Cordoba Mosque-Cathedral remains a focus of controversy in Spain’s twenty-first century society.
