CATHEDRAL

The cathedral was built by removing 144 columns to build the the larger masonry piers required for the support of the taller nave and its vaults. The supports were rebuilt within the same modules and reusing the existing stone. In these photos we can see the gothic  ribbed arches and the fluted columns of the new construction. In the right side photo we can see the later dated Baroque detailing of the altar reredos and the dentils in the stonework at the base of the main dome.

The wall below is located within the Capilla de Villaviciosa in the ‘cathedral’ portion of the mosque and is representative of the accommodations made between the Christian iconography of the cross within the Muslim detailing of the walls, which in this case reveal the superimposed polylobed arches of the later phases of the mosque.
